CUSTOMERS OF J Sainsbury, Texaco and Barclaycard are to receive TalkTime credits, a new free phone calls promotional scheme from BT. Consumers collect credits from participating promoters and send them to a handling centre which verifies claims and ensures the correct amount is deducted from their BT account. The cost of the calls is paid by the promoter, and collectors don’t have to be BT subscribers - they can donate their calls to family or friends who are BT customers, or to charities such as the NSPCC. BT says it will match charitable donations pound for pound. TalkTime has dual benefits to BT: not only is it likely to be a nice little earner in its own right but - more importantly - it is another lever to stem the monthly flow of 60,000 customers to cable telephony. The scheme will be launched on 4 July backed by a TV ad campaign.
