THIS YEAR will see the introduction by BT of 2,500 multimedia phone booths at key public sites such as airports, motorway service stations, rail termini and shopping malls. Complete with manoeuvrable 10-inch screens, the booths will offer e-mail facilities and Internet access, including interactive online shopping and home banking services. Users will receive free e-mail addresses via BT's Talk21 e-mail service, and rates are likely to be around 1p per unit higher than standard local call charges. 'Several million' pounds are being invested in the initiative.
