British Telecommunications yesterday unveiled a flat rate internet access package for its WAP mobile phones.

For £20 per month, subscribers to WAP services on the BT Cellnet wireless network will be able to access unlimited text messaging and internet services via the company’s Genie portal.

Genie’s UK managing director Laurence Alexander said that such offers would spur demand for the nascent technology. “Flat rates are driving growth in fixed line internet access. The same will happen with the mobile internet,” he predicted.

There will also be a £10 flat rate for unlimited text messaging only.

The new tariffs can only be accessed through Genie’s website to avoid the cost of call centres and shops.
