DEBRIEF’S PREDICTION that BT is to introduce free local calls [5-58] scooped the field. It was not until 22 June that a national newspaper, the excellent Sunday Business, caught-up with us. 'It’s something we’re more than capable of doing after the Oftel ruling on flexible pricing earlier this year', a BT spokesman told the newspaper. The free calls would probably be a quid pro quo for subscribers willing to pay a higher line rental. Earlier in June, Cable & Wireless Communications became the first fixed-line company to offer customers a ‘bundled’ deal with 100 free minutes for local evening calls.
