Satellite broadcaster BSkyB has hit its target of reaching five million homes ahead of schedule.

Since the end of September, when BSkyB had 4.08m digital customers, the broadcaster has gained an extra 50,000 digital subscribers every week. On top of this figure, Sky also has just under 500,000 remaining analogue subscribers. The analogue service will be switched off in June.

The company also yesterday launched a new interactive betting service through Surrey Sports, a unit of the Sports Internet Group it acquired earlier in 2000. Punters will be able to place bets using their remote controls while watching sporting events.
