Satellite broadcaster BSkyB is preparing the launch of an ADSL service providing digital TV on demand and high-speed internet access to televisions through telephone lines.

The company, part of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, is currently in talks with BT and several other companies about using the telephone networks to provide the service. It hopes to launch the venture in early 2001.

ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) technology requires the installation of new equipment at telephone exchanges as well as digital set-top boxes in subscribers’ homes. Kingston Communications in Hull has already attracted 8,000 customers to its ADSL service.
