BERTELSMANN AND READER’S DIGEST ABANDON TALKS

News, 21 September 2000

Negotiations between Reader’s Digest Association of the US and German media colossus Bertelsmann to combine parts of their businesses seem to have foundered, according to informed sources.

It is believed that the two firms, which began talks earlier this year, discussed the combination of their databases and book-club, music-club and magazine units.

Spokes for the two declined to comment, though it is believed that Bertelsmann pulled out because it thought the move would not help its businesses.
