BELLSOUTH AD SUPREMO QUITS IN WAKE OF AGENCY REVIEW

News, 23 October 2000

All is not sweet accord, it seems, following the recent merger between the wireless assets of BellSouth Wireless and SBC Communications – now melded as Cingular Wireless.

One key decision causing particular dissent was last week’s appointment of Omnicom’s BBDO Worldwide to handle its $200 million account [WAMN: 17-Oct-00]. This, according to insiders, split Cingular’s review panel, with the views of president-ceo Stephen Carter winning the day.

The decision prompted the immediate resignation of former BellSouth advertising director Wendy Clark, although a Cingular spoke insists that ''Stephen Carter did not overrule the advertising team and change the entire decision.''

The also-rans in the contest for Cingular’s business were incumbent GSD&M in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta’s West Wayne.
