Apple Computer is to feature advertising on its hugely successful iTunes internet music store.

The introduction of visual ads to the site could be the first step to ads in other content areas or on the iconic iPod music players themselves.

The service has so far limited commercials intrusions to audio spots embedded in some of the podcasts available via iTunes.

Steve Jobs, ceo of US-headquartered Apple, has backed the idea of ad-supported podcasts and may consider running ads in premium iTunes content, for which the company currently charges users.

But Apple may come under pressure as rival content suppliers offer similar products to users at no cost, but with ads. US television network ABC is about trial free versions of its shows with ads that cannot be skipped [WAMN: 11-Apr-06]

Comments analyst Ben Bajarin: "It's an interesting test for ABC and we'll be watching how it affects iTunes."
