Amazon Tops Brit E-tail Poll But eBay Takes Euro Crown

News, 15 January 2002

Britain’s most popular online retailer remains Amazon.co.uk, according to figures from Nielsen/NetRatings, but the e-tailer was pipped at the post in Europe by eBay.de.

Amazon.co.uk topped the British poll with 2.37 million UK unique users in December, ahead of eBay.co.uk and the internet arm of supermarket giant Tesco in second and third respectively.

The e-tailer’s British success extended elsewhere in Europe, as the Amazon group claimed three of the top five most visited sites in the continent – Amazon.de (3.83m European unique users), Amazon.com (3.68m) and Amazon.co.uk (2.52m) were second, third and fourth respectively. However, top spot went to eBay.de with 4.37m, while eBay.com came in at number five.
