The nascent Nipponese online market received a shot in the arm yesterday with the launch of a Japanese language site by giant US e-tailer Amazon.com.
Initially, the site vends only books, offering 1.1 million Japanese titles plus some 600,000 foreign-language volumes. The e-tailer has recruited a number of local companies as distribution partners.
Amazon ceo Jeff Bezos claims that its US site is already among Japan’s most visited cyber venues with local sales running at around $34m annually. He declined to reveal the level of investment in the new venture.
Amazon’s growth strategy is to expand the lines on offer at the Japanese site, rolling-out to music and video products as it has in Britain, Germany and France.
Amazon, one of the oldest surviving e-businesses, has yet to move into the black
