Following Tuesday’s news that Labour peer Waheed Alli is to quit Carlton Communications in order to work on Castaway Productions, his TV production company that controls the wildly successful Survivor format, Lord Alli is also said to be considering a bid for UK national daily The Star.

However, it is thought unlikely that he will make any formal move for The Star until the fate of its sister papers – the Daily and Sunday Express – is settled [WAMN: 30-Oct-00]. Alli has already held informal talks about acquiring the far-from-twinkling Star and relaunching it as a youth-oriented tabloid with a celeb/sports editorial format.

In the meantime, his Lordship is expected to devote more time to political matters in the run-up to the UK general election.
