AVON IN TALKS WITH DEPARTMENT STORES

News, 19 September 2000

Cosmetics group Avon has confirmed it is negotiating with retailers JC Penney and Sears Roebuck to sell makeup through their branches.

Avon plans to produce a cosmetics range available solely in JC Penney and Sears outlets. The venture is part of a diversification by the company which has already seen moves into internet sales and Avon kiosks in malls.

Andrea Jung, Avon’s new chief executive, denied that the initiative would mean an end to the famous 'Avon Ladies' who sell door-to-door. “While direct selling will always be our principal sales channel, expanding access to new customers will accelerate top line growth” she said.
