America Online yesterday announced plans to buy speech recognition technology specialist Quack.com for an unstated sum.
The deal follows AOL’s purchase in July of a 1% strategic stake in a similar enterprise, SpeechWorks. The latest buy, says Ted Leonsis, president of AOL's Interactive Properties Group, “will help extend the AOL experience beyond the PC, and give our members the ability to turn any wireless or home or office phone into a robust AOL access device."
AOL aims to use the bought-in technology to enable internet access via voice command to information such as stocks, traffic, weather, movies, and sports.
