America Online is conducting a fresh round of layoffs in the US as it seeks to reduce costs.

The 450 job losses announced this week represent 2% of the online giant's workforce. Software engineers and developers have borne the brunt of the redundancies.

Following the layoffs, the Time Warner unit will close its software development offices in San Diego and San Francisco at the end of the year. Around 100 of the 450 employees facing redundancy will be offered the chance to relocate to AOL's headquarters in Dulles, Virginia, or its office in White Plains, New York.
