HOLLYWOOD ... the 2008  Academy Awards. At its 80th birthday event on Sunday, the Oscars hit an alltime average ratings low of 32 million viewers , according to data released Monday by the ABC network.

Nielsen Media Research awarded the ceremony an 18.7 rating, (percentage of all TV-owning  households), and 29 for those homes that had actually switched-on their sets.

It's the first time a telecast of the film industry's premier glitzfest has fallen below the 20 rating mark and a 30 (viewing share) mark.

Perhaps drained by all those emotional acceptance speeches, neither ABC nor the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had any comment on the abysmal ratings.
