British American Tobacco-owned cigarette brand Benson & Hedges found itself at the centre of a storm yesterday after admitting it tried to persuade Lords cricket ground in London to remove the prominently sited logo of a major UK charity, Macmillan Cancer Relief, before the televised England Cricket Cup Final last Saturday – title sponsor Benson & Hedges.
The offending logo adorned the one hundred foot-long rain cover that protects the cricket pitch at Lords, the traditional home (holy temple, many believe) of English cricket. The rights to the cover site are owned by insurance company Amlin which had donated the space to the charity.
B&H opined that the ad should be withdrawn as the charity might feel it “inappropriate" to be associated with the event. But Macmillan decided that the Benson & Hedges demand wasn’t cricket and refused to remove its logo.
