Britain's second largest ITV company, Carlton Communications has agreed to pay the largest, Granada Media, £181 million for the Wales and south-west England franchise HTV. The sale also includes a 20% stake in Meridian, the ITV broadcaster covering south-east England.

HTV commands an audience of some 4.5 million and its acquisition lifts Carlton’s total coverage to nearly 50% of the UK population – 26,000,000 homes.

The sale was a condition of regulatory approval for Granada’s purchase of United News & Media’s television assets earlier this year [WAMN: 28-Jul-00].
