Lachlan Murdoch, 29-year-old eldest son of media mogul Rupert, will take up one of the highest posts in his father’s News Corp, confirming his status as heir apparent.

Murdoch junior, currently running News Corp’s Australian operations as well as US firms like the New York Post and HarperCollins, will become deputy to the media empire’s president and coo Peter Chernin.

He fills a vacancy left by Chase Carey, former co-coo, who was put in charge of Sky Global Networks.

The news coincides with reports that News Corp is contemplating a move into the Russian market by buying that country’s Media Most group.
