RTL, the pan-European broadcasting group, has revealed that it aims to raise the audience share of its UK subsidiary Channel 5 from 6% to 10%.

Richard Eyre, head of development at RTL, promised investment in new drama for Channel 5, though the exact sums remain undecided.

RTL was formed earlier this year from the merged broadcasting interests of Bertelsmann, Pearson and Audiofina. Seeking further expansion in Europe, the group has increased its stake in Spanish channel Antena 3 from 10% to 16.23%, and announced a partnership with Telefonica Media SA, the major shareholder in Antena 3. “They have some very attractive businesses in Spain”, said RTL chief executive Didier Bellens, “as we do in other parts of Europe, and we may combine these operations”.

The move could involve media ventures spanning Europe and Latin America.
