NTL announced last week that chief operating officer Leigh Woodis to take a year’s break to spend more time with her family.

The cable TV operator will bring in Stephen Carter, currently ceo of J Walter Thompson, to fill the void as chief operating officer designate. Starting November 14, he will work alongside Wood until taking up the role full-time next April.

Wood, however, may still have a future with NTL. "She's very well thought of at the company”, said one anonymous analyst, “and will come back, I'm sure, at some senior post".
