Among the recommendations of a 462-page report on reducing tobacco use are more stringent restrictions on cigarette advertising.
Published yesterday by US surgeon general David Hatcher, the report accuses tobacco companies of targeting more of their advertising at minorities and comments that US regulation of tobacco ads is “considerably less restrictive than other countries”. Hatcher also slams R J Reynolds Tobacco Company for its Joe Camel cartoon ads, describing them as “a purposeful attempt to reach kids”.
Argues the surgeon general: “There is a need to better regulate the advertising, promotion and sale of tobacco products. . . . Stricter regulation of selling and promoting tobacco products is needed to keep young people from starting to smoke.”
