Football pools, the erstwhile passion of Britain's punters, toppled by the advent of the National Lottery, may be set to make a comeback – on television.

Cable giant Telewest and Littlewoods Leisure's online gambling subsidiary Bet247 have set-up a joint venture to run a variety of pools and lottery games on interactive TV. The duo claim it is the first time iTV has been used for this purpose.

Punters will play the pools from the comfort of their Dralon three-piece suites, forecasting which of the week’s soccer fixtures will end in draws, all via their TV remotes. The immediacy of the medium will allow them to make their selections for most matches right up until kick-off.

Littlewoods believes it will score with this combination of convenience with a potential jackpot of £2 million.
