J Sainsbury, the UK’s second largest supermarket chain, is to pilot a six-store trial on Shell forecourts in southern England.

Starting in February 2001, the outlets will adopt the recently introduced Sainsbury Local brand and format, vending convenience foods, fresh fruit, vegetables, bakery and non-food items as well as Shell's automotive products.

Says Ian Sutcliffe, manager of Shell's UK retail operations: "This trial gives us the opportunity to combine the strengths of our respective brands".
