Currently under fire from its own board of governors for deteriorating programme quality, the BBC should be regulated alongside its commercial rivals by a single communications regulatory authority, argues consumer watchdog, the National Consumer Council.

The NCC’s demand forms part of its submission to the consultation process for the Government’s forthcoming communications white paper.

Explains NCC director, Anna Bradley: "Radical and imaginative ideas are needed if public service broadcasting is to survive and be enhanced in the digital era. The new framework for public service broadcasting must be founded on the interests of consumers and funded in a way that ensures that it is universally accessible and affordable."
