Number two in the UK below-the-line agency league, US-owned Carlson Marketing Group, has promoted Marcus Evans to UK group chairman whilst at the same time effectively merging its two main agency brands, Smith Bundy Carlson and Eleven. Although the twin shops retain their separate identities, they will operate under one management team with Mike Bowen, current managing director of Eleven, at the helm. He also assumes responsibility for SBC, while SBC creative director Chris Martin, becomes group creative director.
Evans replaces Robert Janes, who moves to an international role and, as part of a general restructuring, the position of group chief executive is axed. Joint incumbents, Steve Cook and David Perkins respectively become client development director and director of international strategy. Perkins’ new international role has him reporting to Janes.
Evans, a former chairman and chief executive of Bates Communications, joined Carlson as group development director just six months ago, following his walkout from Bates in the wake of its stormy merger with another shop within Bates’ UK below-the-line network.
The rationale for the upheaval? According to Evans: "We want to consolidate our position as the largest and best customer relationship marketing agency in Europe and continue to develop and simplify what is becoming a convoluted and jargonistic area."
