Thomas D Bell Jnr, president and chief executive of Young & Rubicam group is set to step down following completion of the company’s acquisition by WPP Group, say sources close to the New York agency.

However, Bell has agreed to sit on the four-strong committee that will oversee the integration of Y&R into WPP. According to Y&R insiders, the relationship between Mr Bell and WPP’s Sir Martin Sorrell, progressively deteriorated during the aborted initial discussions although the past week has seen something of a thaw.

Bell, the former chairman and chief executive of the Y&R group’s flagship agency, moved into his present role of group chief executive only in January.
