ANTI-TOBACCO lobbyist Action on Smoking and Health has appointed former IBM marketer Clive Bates as director, replacing Pamela Furness. His brief is to push the tobacco control agenda as far as possible, including a total marketing ban: 'Unless you make the ban as wide-ranging as possible, the tobacco marketers' £100m budgets will go elsewhere', says Bates. 'We need a ban on all promotion.' The government's stance on tobacco direct marketing activity is unclear and ASH last month urged health secretary Frank Dobson, to include dm in a total ban.
