LONDON-BASED market researcher Datamonitor predicts that the UK and Germany will be vying for leadership of the European online shopping market by 2002. Between them, the two countries will purchase 43% of software facilitating the operation of online commerce. Sales of the software will increase at an average annual rate of 41% over the next four years, hitting $285 million (£173m). Datamonitor forecasts that e-commerce will be one of the principal engines of economic growth over the next ten years.
