NEW DELHI: Tata Motors, Aditya Birla Nuvo and Bharti Airtel are the companies with the best reputations in India, new figures have shown.
Nielsen, the insights provider, polled 1,700 consumers, policy-makers and business executives regarding their opinions of 32 major corporations that are headquartered in India.
Tata Motors, part of a large conglomerate of business units spanning everything from the auto sector to retail and management consultancy, took top spot in the rankings overall.
More specifically, the company, which created the low-cost Nano mini-car, was praised for pursuing "innovative techniques, providing reliable products and striving for excellence."
Aditya Birla Nuvo, another diversified holding group active in sectors from textiles and chemicals to financial services and telecoms, claimed second position, the analysis revealed.
Bharti Airtel, the mobile telecoms giant, was third, and recently India's first 4G network. Sanjay Kapoor, the firm's CEO for India and South Asia, argued that lower cost handsets would be vital to encouraging popular uptake of this platform.
"As the ecosystem picks up and more people start using the services and more devices become available, the prices will fall," he said.
Reliance Industries, which trades in fields from petrochemcials to retail, was fourth, ahead of Tata Steel, the leader in last year's report.
Wipro, the IT services firm, also saw a relative decline in year on year having claimed seventh, measured against the fourth place it was awarded in 2011.
ITC, another conglomerate, ICICI Bank, the financial services group, and Hero MotoCorp, the motorcycle manufacturer, were some of the new entrants into this year's charts.
Among the core criteria shaping perceptions were "excitement factors" like innovation, rapid growth and gaining substantial media coverage, Nielsen found. Broader issues playing a role included "vision" and leadership.
