PARIS: Increasing numbers of French consumers are utilising the mobile web and apps, with Google, Facebook and YouTube some of the most popular platforms among this audience.
Médiamétrie, the research firm, reported that 17.7m people accessed the net via this route in the month before the study.
This constituted an improvement of nearly 10% on the figure registered in equivalent analysis conducted during the first quarter of 2011.
Some 70.7% of the individuals who went online in such a way did so on an almost daily basis, a leap from just under 66% compared with earlier this year.
More broadly, 94.4% of mobile subscribers with access to 3G networks have viewed at least one website on a wireless handset, up three percentage points from the third quarter of 2010.
Google's search engine was the most widely-used mobile site, attracting 11.3m unique visitors in the second quarter, ahead of Facebook, the social network, only 500,000 visitors behind.
Orange, the telecoms group, secured 8.5m visitors across the same period, beating the score of 7.5m logged by SFR, the transport provider.
Video-sharing platform YouTube posted 6.7m, followed by microblogging property Twitter, yielding 5.5m.
Elsewhere, 48.8% of the sample had used one or more mobile applications in Q2 2011, an uptick of more than 17 points measured against Q3 2010.
Overall, 7.7m people accessed Google through an app in the second quarter of 2011, reaching 6.7m for YouTube and 5.4m regarding Apple's iTunes music service.
Facebook generated 4.1m on this metric, trailed by Orange, which recorded a comparative total of 3.2m.
