CANNES: Volkswagen, the German automaker, will be named as the "Advertiser of the Year" at this year's Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, the annual adland event which is being held in June.
The company has received nearly 150 "Lions" for its marketing communications since 1961, including Grand Prix awards in the film, press and interactive categories, taking the latter in 2006 for its GTI campaign, which is discussed in more detail here.
Terry Savage, chairman of the festival, said he was "delighted to honour a brand that has loyally supported, and that continues to embrace, the creative marketing of its cars."
He added that the Wolfsburg-based auto manufacturer – which has recently announced a merger with Porsche – was a "role model to other brands and worthy of this prestigious honour."
Jochen Sengpiehl, svp at Volkswagen Marketing, argued that advertising was part of the company's "DNA", and also credited its agencies, including DDB Worldwide and BBDO, for recently producing "outstanding work in difficult times."
