SEATTLE: The world's biggest online retailer, Amazon.com, is setting-up a new Latin American customer contact site to capitalise on the "explosive growth" in ecommerce across the region.
Consumers there currently buy goods through its US site. Amazon has not made it clear whether this Latin American move - which will provide "a large team of associates and managers" - is a precursor to a future direct presence in the region.
The company is one of the most popular online retailers in Latin America. The US site offers a Spanish language books section, with reviews and summaries in Spanish.
Amazon's last venture into new territories was in 2004, when it snapped up China's Joyo.com site.
Overall internet usage is expanding rapidly across Latin America, with around 120 million users, mainly in Brazil and Mexico.
