Euphemistically-styled 'adult' publisher/broadcaster Playboy Enterprises is eyeing the attractions of the pink pound.
The Chicago-headquartered soft porn empire, headed by the ever-vigorous Hugh Hefner (who celebrates his 80th birthday on April 9) and his daughter Christie, is considering a move into the UK's gay TV market.
The company already broadcasts Playboy TV via cable and satellite to British audiences. Says ceo Christie, clearly a Hefner to her fingertips: "Where there is a meaningful gay market, launching under a different brand is something we are very comfortable doing."
She adds: "I wouldn't be surprised if we launched something this year, given the importance of the market in Britain."
The bunny-eared brand's diversification is aimed at boosting revenues beyond last year's $329 million (€273m; £190m)). Pre-tax profit in 2005 was $14m million, ending several years of losses stemming from investment in internet expansion.
