Latest pay figures for top US media executives show Comcast supremo Brian Roberts topping the heap for 2004 with remuneration of $33.5 million (€28.6m; £19.3m).
The president of the nation's largest cable company was closely followed in the compensation league by James Robbins, president/ceo of rival Cox Communications with a £29.4m package. After him came veteran Viacom chairman Sumner M Redstone ($28.3m) and News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch ($23.6m).
Magazine companies produced just one major earner in the person of Harold McGraw III, chairman/ceo of McGraw-Hill, with $16.7m. His peers in the magazine business were rewarded on a less lavish scale: Meredith boss William Kerr made $4.41m; Susan Lyne, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia president/ceo, collected $4.29m, while outgoing Reader's Digest boss Thomas Ryder earned $4.22m in 2004.
Among newspaper publishers, battling with migrating advertising revenues, EW Scripps president/ceo Kenneth Lowe made $6.23m; Gannett' boss Douglas McCorkindale took home $5.84m while Lee Enterprises chairman/president Mary Junck pocketed $5.24m.
Of industry association honchos, the National Cable and Telecommunications Association 2004 president/ceo Robert Sachs's total compensation was $1.49m. (He has now been replaced by Kyle McSlarrow.)
