London's long serving Evening Standard newspaper could be under threat from a new sibling as its owners plan a free version of the title.
Associated Newspapers is working on 'Standard Lite', a slimmed down, lunchtime free paper in response to media mogul Richard Desmond's still ill-defined plan to launch a rival giveaway in the city.
Desmond, who owns the Daily Expressand Sunday Express newspapers, holds the key to the Standard venture, which could be on the streets in a matter of weeks. It is believed Associated will go ahead only if Desmond launches his giveaway.
