US durable goods ordered stayed flat in December, according to latest Commerce Department figures.

Total orders for products designed to last more than three years stood at $181 billion (€145bn; £99bn), unchanged from the November figure. Nevertheless, December's flat reading was an improvement on the previous month's 2.3% decline.

Manufacturers of communications equipment had an especially tough month, with orders tumbling 18%. Computer and electronic equipment orders were also down, falling 2.7% on November.
