India is set to ban all tobacco advertising.
The country’s cabinet has given the green light to a bill to this effect, and the parliament is due to approve it within weeks.
• Separately, a study by media consultancy Strategic Mediaworks for the World Health Organization shows that the Indian film industry has failed to cut down on the portrayal of smoking in movies.
India produces over 900 films a year, more than any other nation. Of these, 76% feature tobacco use, and this proportion has been rising over the last ten years.
