Shareholders in Scottish media firm SMG have given the green light to the sale of the group’s newspaper arm to US publishing giant Gannett.

Agreed last month after a protracted auction [WAMN: 26-Dec-02], the £216 million ($353m; €326m) transaction sees SMG’s Herald and Evening Times titles pass to the owner of USA Today.

The deal is subject to regulatory approval, with a decision expected by April.
