Rumours last month [WAMN: 12-Aug-02] that Unilever was to dispose of its cosmetics division, which houses upmarket brand Calvin Klein, proved only partly true: the unit is still up for sale, but without CK.
According to Unilever chairman Anthony Burgmans, the consumer goods colossus plans to retain the fragrance as one of its core brands. Under its ‘path to growth’ scheme, the group’s product portfolio is being trimmed from 1,600 to just 400 key businesses, with the loss of 25,000 jobs.
Although CK will remain part of the group, the rest of Unilever Cosmetics International, which includes brands such as Karl Lagerfeld, is expected to go.
