Fit for purpose: IJMR Research Methods Forum 2010

Judie Lannon

Peter Mouncey chaired a characteristically stimulating MRS discussion on methodology at 'Fit for Purpose', athe third annual IJMR Research Methods Forum, which was held in London in November 2010.

The real question, of course, is fit for exactly what purpose - and here the contributions reflected the increasing divergence between the needs of the public sector and what is becoming acceptable in the commercial sector.

In a nutshell, as the public service speakers pointed out, government surveys must maintain the Rolls Royce standards in sample selection, questionnaire design and analysis, whereas the commercial sector is much freer to experiment with the many methodologies made available by new technologies.
