The 'Refund-Crux' – or a big misunderstanding

In the consumers' minds there is the one crucial misunderstanding, that packaging that is refundable is environmentally friendly. Thus people buy bottles made from Polyethylenterephthalat (PET), which are integrated in the deposit system in Germany and – on a voluntary basis – in Switzerland, too. But in reality these plastic bottles are harmful to the environment due to high energy consumption during the production, the unfavorable carbon footprint and also the amount of "limited" raw material (oil) needed for each PET-bottle. Nevertheless consumers tend to prefer this packaging as depositing a bottle for refund feels like bringing a new one on its way.
