INTRODUCTION

Ten years ago the main field of activity for the information specialist fell within the scientific and technical areas, with extreme importance given to patents. The resulting monitoring of scientific and technical areas of activity has gradually led to competitor monitoring: having detected the major actors within a precise sector because they filed patents we wanted to know their real market weight. We therefore organized a systematic monitoring of the competitors, characterized by a competitive intelligence tracking system.

The Competitor Monitoring Program (CMP)

At the end of the 1980s, Leonard Fuld a competitive intelligence specialist in the United States noted:

'A wellorganized competitor monitoring program can significantly increase your companys profits and protect your firm from losing business to its competitors.'
