Research capabilities in selected countries in CEE: Regional determinants of international projects

When I started analyzing data associated with research capabilities, it soon became evident that it is more than an issue of availability of facilities. This paper shows how differences at the level of facilities can sometimes be a significant issue in conducting fieldwork in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries. To illustrate the most important circumstances that affect research projects in CEE countries, the projects can be divided into three groups on the following bases:

  • Socio-demographic diversification

  • Availability of technical facilities

  • Methodological background

Even if it seems obvious from the perspective of research agencies, these factors should be redefined in a regional approach.
