What's Changed Since 1999?


Economic fears (see Figure 1.) are leading to increasing conservatism and extremism. This was demonstrated in the unexpected electoral success of Jean Marie le Pen and humiliation of Lionel Jospin. It is also reflected in the increase of fears over immigration (especially from Algeria). One consequence of the recession is that young people are staying living with their parents longer and longer (the subject of the recent film Tanguy). (See Figure 2.)
