Social Media: Beyond the Hype, a conference organised by Warc and held in London in October 2011, was intended to provide something of a reality check to social media marketers.

As the channel is still very new, few best practices for advertisers have been established. Social media has also led to an explosion in trackable real-time data from customers, adding to the confusion.

"We're all drowning in data," Martin Thomas, the conference chair, said. "And the number one concern of senior management is complexity."
