Bartle Bogle Hegarty has been awarded creative duties for Barclays Bank, ousting two-year incumbent Leagas Delaney, the agency responsible for the bank’s ill-timed and controversial ‘Big’ campaign.

BBH will be responsible for communicating the bank’s “brand architecture strategy”, said Barclays’ marketing director Simon Gulliford.

“Leagas Delaney will continue to work for the foreseeable future on selected key projects,” he continued. “They have consistently produced high-quality, award-winning work for Barclays. However, the Barclays brand is expanding all the time, and we believe this requires us to bring in new input to develop the overall group-wide strategy, as we wanted to get a fresh view from an agency currently not working with any of our group businesses.”

Gulliford recently joined Barclays from magazine publisher Emap, where he worked both with BBH and Starcom Motive, the agency awarded the bank’s £22 million media account earlier this month [WAMN: 04-Jul-01].
