LONDON: April saw an average of 1.4 million UK homes downloading streamed TV programs from the BBC via its new free iPlayer device. Usage was 27% up on March, and is expected to continue growing at a similar rate
The overall total for BBC downloads in April was 21m, rising from 17.2m in March and 11.2m in January. User profiles indicate that the 35-54age group has a marginal lead over the 16-34 category, with 43% of users in the older group versus 37% in the younger.
Over-55s accounted for just over one fifth (21%) of all downloads.
Leading the pack among the top twenty most-requested programmes were BBC1's Doctor Who and The Apprentice, although six BBC3 shows also featured – among them BAFTA award-winner Gavin and Stacey which accounted for 250,000 requests for download or streaming in a single week.
