Latest figures from the UK say internet shopping is booming.

A report from Continental Research reveals 17 million British adults now buy online, out of 25m home internet users.

The average annual spend is nearly £500 ($902; €742), and the most popular purchase is airline tickets, followed by DVDs, books and CDs. A third of consumers say they will increase the amount they spend online.

The march of internet shopping is a direct result of increased broadband use and the improving quality of internet ads, according to the researcher.

Says Continental director Colin Shaddick: "Broadband makes the internet a far more accessible and useful tool which can actually provide everyday functionality and service rather than something that you might use now and again. For two years home internet access has not grown but in the last 12 months it has jumped 6%."

Currently 56% of UK homes have internet access, with 8m signed up to broadband, up from 4.2m last year.
