Greenwich, Connecticut-headquartered Unilever Home and Personal Care USA is recalling four million teddy bears distributed in a consumer promotion for its Snuggle brand of fabric softener.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, there had been thirty-two reported cases of eyes and noses becoming detached from the Chinese-made bears, although no injuries have been reported.

Snuggle – whose logo features a teddy bear – offered the cuddly toy in several sizes and styles in a long running US-wide promo between May 1997 and December 2001. Consumers should “take these bears away from young children immediately and call Unilever”, waned the Safety Commission.

One of the bears prompted a warning from the commission last year after fears that a yellow nightcap pom-pom could become loose and create a choking hazard.

Unilever confirmed that the bears had not been shipped to markets outside the US and said that the cost of the recall would be in the region of $6 per bear – around $20 million (€23.0m; £14.03m) in total.
